UFC On Versus 2: Jones vs Matyushenko Picks

Sorry for the no show for the past couple of days, had to reattach pieces of my keyboard back together after my son tore a bunch off. Enough about me and my bellyaching how about some mma content.

This sunday will mark the UFC’s second appearance on the Versus network. The card will also feature the same headliner, light heavyweight phenom Jon ‘Bone’ Jones facing the UFC veteran and former IFC light heavyweight champion Vladimir Matyushenko. Tonights event takes place at the San Diego Sports Arena in California, the picks will be main card only.

vs.

Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko – It’s hard not to pick against Bones, the man destroys his opponents even when he loses. Going up against him is a solid journeyman in The Janitor, other than his wrestling stifling Jones en route to a decision I see this fight ending in brutal fashion. Barring Matyushenko revealing a weakness or flaw in Jones’s game or a repeat of Jon’s performance against Hammil earlier this year, expect a stunning finish.

Bones – Via Hellbow TKO

Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami – This is a really intriguing fight with possible title implications for the winner. Both fighters are primarily bullying wrestlers, Okami has showcased a new found striking acumen in his last fight earning him a tko victory, in stark contrast to his usual unanimous decision winning ways. Munoz on the other hand is usually gets out struck in the stand up department and is more dependent on his wrestling to get his opponents to the ground where he unleashes his most dangerous offensive tool: his murderous ground and pound.

Even though I think Munoz is a pretty cool person, this is looking like a really rough fight for him. If Okami is able to stuff his takedowns and pick him apart with his upgraded pugilism, he may get his long awaited title shot.

Okami – via TKO

Jake ‘The Juggernaut’ Ellenberger vs. John ‘Doomsday’ Howard
This fight should take an awards bonus if it plays out as expected. Other than a slight edge in the wrestling department going to Ellenberger, these two brawlers will put on a display of destructive reckless abandon that should please everyone. As a fan of both fighters it will suck to see one of them get clobbered but hey, that’s the fight game. Jakes edge gives him options so I will go with The Juggenaut.

Ellenberger – via KO

Takanori Gomi vs. Tyson Griffin In a battle for lightweight relevancy expect to see Gomi throw everything but the kitchen sink at Griffin. But still getting stifled and stymied and losing a decision. Barring an inexplicable return to Pride era form, Tyson takes this easy. On a side note both fighters would be better off and more competitive at featherweight.

Griffin – via Unanimous Decision

White vs Helwani: The Great P4P Debate

From the new sports round table show on Versus The Daily Line that debuted this week. I wonder how difficult it would be to argue MMA with someone as passionate and charismatic as Dana White?

UFC on Versus = Beatdowns Galore

When they hand out not one, or two but 3 knockout of the night bonus’s, its safe to assume that it was one brutal card. Anyone tuning into Versus for some good ol’ fashioned meet in the middle of the cage and bang styled bouts were not disappointed. From the multiple first round thrashing’s of Vera, Gonzaga and Irivin, there was also the prolonged destruction of Paul Beuntello by Cheik Kongo who used unexpected…what I guess would be classified as wrestling to slowly get and keep the fight on the ground. Turning a somewhat even stand up fight into a completely one sided ground and pound demonstration.

With the main event we yet again saw Jon Bones Jones completely outclass what seemed to be decent competition for such a young fighter. While Vera was on his back getting elbowed from on high, was he regretting his taunting of Jones. The 22 year old fought like a man possessed with some sort of ass kicking demon/entity, even illegal strikes could not deter him from crushing his foe. The JDS express just keeps rolling on and through anyone who unfortunately finds themselves on its warpath. You can’t train the killer instinct that Dos Santos has, something that rare is forged in the hearts of those who truly enjoy hurting people. Last but not least Jon Howard damn near killed a guy, and Clay Guida took home the sub of the night award while everyone else was throwing with bad intentions. Great night of fights and the UFC has already put another Versus show on the calender. On a side note the reffing for this event was pretty good, both Rosenthal and Dean kept cool heads and officiated like veteran professionals throughout the night.

UFC on Versus 1 Picks

This Sunday the UFC is making it’s debut on the Versus network with a stacked card. Whose main & co main events have clear title implications for both the light heavy and heavyweight divisions. And here we go with the picks:

* Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera – Tough call, even with the meteoric rise of Bones Jones despite his first “loss” this fight is easily his biggest and most difficult test of his skills so far. Vera also coming off a questionable defeat is going into this fight with renewed vigor. I’ve been going back and forth on this fight for weeks. Vera won the coin toss but I still can’t shake the feeling that Jones is going to pull off another highlight reel performance. So heres my official pick: Vera by hard fought decision.

* Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga – All aboard the JDS Express, Gabe’s been out boxed before and I see it happening again in brutal fashion: Junior by brutal TKO stoppage.

* Paul Buentello vs. Cheick Kongo – Word on the webs is that Buentello has been in Colorado for the past month getting some high altitude training. So The Headhunter will weather the early storm and if he can get past that, I see his training paying off: Paul via KO

* James Irvin vs. Alessio Sakara – I make it a habit never to pick fighters who have been out of action over a year recovering from injuries. On top of that Irvin has a new weight cut to deal with so I have Sakara taking the W: Sakara via TKO

Hopefully I won’t be completely wrong, either way this should be night of very exciting fights. The Clinch will also be tweeting during the event.
